# Why Your Brand's Pantone Might Not Print on a Tumbler

The brand book is exact. Every color has a number, the numbers are non-negotiable, and the marketing team has fought real battles to keep them that way. Then the drinkware proof comes back and one of those colors carries a flag.

Nobody did anything wrong. The artwork is fine, the printer is fine, the file is fine. That color was never reachable on that machine, and the only question that matters is whether you find out at the proof or after five hundred tumblers are boxed.

## The Warning We Publish Five Times

Five of our own pages carry the same caveat, in nearly the same words: we match brand colors within the gamut a digital UV system can render, and we flag any Pantone living outside it before the proof. Metallics, neons, and some deep blues are honest edge cases on any digital system.

Copy does not get repeated across five pages by accident. It is there because the question arrives with real quotes, weekly, and because the failure it prevents is expensive: a decorator who does not flag an out-of-gamut color up front ships a print that looks close enough to them and wrong to your brand team. What none of those pages had room to explain is why the limit exists. That is this post.

## A Gamut Is Physics, Not a Skill Gap

A digital UV printer builds every color it produces from four translucent process inks plus white, laid down in a single pass. The gamut is simply the set of colors those inks can mix. It is large. Most brand palettes sit entirely inside it, which is why most projects never meet this problem.

Three families of color sit outside it, each for its own physical reason:

* **Metallics.** Metallic is not a color, it is reflectance: light bouncing off actual metal. Ink can print the hue of gold, a warm ochre doing an impression. It cannot print shine, because shine is a property of the surface, not the pigment.
* **Neons.** Fluorescent colors absorb ultraviolet light and re-emit it as visible light, which is why they seem to glow. Process inks can only reflect the light that hits them. A neon printed from process inks reads dimmer than the swatch because it physically is dimmer.
* **Some deep blues.** The most saturated corner of the deep-blue range sits beyond what the process set can mix. The nearest match is usually close. A brand team that lives with the color will still see the difference, which is exactly why it gets flagged rather than quietly substituted.

No press setting fixes any of these, on our floor or anyone else's. A decorator promising an exact match on all three families is promising physics, and physics does not take rush orders.

## The Vessel Is the Fifth Ink

There is a second variable most buyers never hear about: the color underneath the print. The inks are translucent, which is why the system prints white as well, laying an underbase that gives the art an opaque ground to sit on.

That means the vessel participates in the final color. The same file reads one way on a white tumbler and another on matte black, and the difference is not a defect, it is how translucent ink over a ground works. On dark vessels the white underbase does the heavy lifting; where art is printed without it, the substrate tints everything above it.

Treat the vessel color as part of the palette, not as packaging the palette arrives in. The digital mockup on your actual product, in the actual colorway, is where this stops being theory.

## What to Do Instead

An out-of-gamut flag is not a dead end. It is a fork with three good paths:

* **Make the metallic real metal.** Laser engraving on stainless exposes bright steel: a metallic finish that is metal, not a printed impression of it. For logos built around a metallic element, this is usually the honest answer, and it is on our [laser engraving](/laser-engraving) page.
* **Put the brand color in the vessel.** If the unreachable color is the background of the design, choose drinkware in that color and print everything else. The substrate holds the exact color no gamut can mix, because it is not being mixed.
* **Approve the nearest match with open eyes.** For many palettes the nearest in-gamut color is close enough that the brand team signs off once they see it on the actual product. The difference between that and a surprise is entirely about when the decision happens.

## How We Handle It

Every file gets reviewed against the brand colors before anything is proofed, and any Pantone outside the gamut is flagged then, with the nearest achievable match shown on a mockup of your specific product. We would rather tell you straight than ship a miss, and because every color in the file prints in a single pass, there is no per-color charge steering that conversation. The constraint is physics, never pricing.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### Can you match Pantone colors on drinkware?

Yes, within the CMYK gamut a digital UV system can render, which covers most of a typical brand palette. Any Pantone that lives outside that gamut gets flagged before the proof, with the nearest achievable match shown on a mockup of your actual product, so nothing ships as a surprise.

### Why will metallic gold or silver not print?

Because metallic is not a color, it is reflectance: light bouncing off actual metal. Translucent process inks can print the hue of gold but not the shine, so any printed metallic is an impression. When the metallic matters, laser engraving on stainless exposes real steel, which is a metallic finish made of metal rather than a print imitating one.

### Do neon or fluorescent brand colors print?

Not at full strength. Fluorescent colors work by absorbing ultraviolet light and re-emitting it as visible light, while process inks can only reflect what hits them. A neon printed from CMYK reads dimmer than the swatch because it physically is. We flag it, show the nearest match, and let you decide before anything runs.

### Does the tumbler color change the printed color?

Yes. The inks are translucent and print as CMYK plus white, so the white underbase and the vessel color both participate in what your eye sees. The same art file reads differently on matte black than on white, which makes the vessel color a design decision. The mockup on your actual product is where that gets judged.

### What happens when one of my colors is flagged out of gamut?

You see the nearest achievable match on the proof and make the call: approve it knowingly, shift the art, put the brand color in the vessel instead of the ink, or move a metallic element to engraving. Nothing goes to production until you have decided, which is the entire point of flagging it before the proof instead of after the run.
