Fiber vs CO2 Lasers on Drinkware: Two Machines, Two Different Marks

A venue puts two things on one purchase order: powder-coated stainless tumblers for the retail shelf, and pint glasses for the bar. Same logo file, same brand standards, same decorator.
The finished pieces come back carrying two different marks. Bright steel on the tumblers, soft frosted white on the glass. The brand manager wants to know which one is wrong.
Neither. That is two different lasers doing exactly what each one does, and nobody explained the difference before the order went in.
“Do You Have a Laser” Is the Wrong Question
Laser engraving gets discussed as though it were one method. It is two. In drinkware there are two machine types, they work on different materials, and they leave marks that look nothing alike.
Most facilities run one of them and make every job fit it. That is not dishonesty. It is a capital decision made years before your order arrived. It does become your constraint, though, the moment you ask for a substrate their machine does not do well.
What a Fiber Laser Actually Does
A fiber laser cuts through powder coat and anodizing to expose the bare stainless underneath. The result is a bright metal mark with hard, legible edges, which is the look most people picture when they imagine an engraved tumbler.
It runs on:
- Powder-coated stainless tumblers and bottles
- Bare and brushed stainless
- Anodized aluminum
Two things follow from that, and both affect how you should design for it.
The mark is two-tone by nature. The engraving is the color of the steel underneath, and the background is the color of the coating on top. That makes your coating choice a design decision rather than just a catalog selection. A logo with fine interior detail reads one way against matte black and another against white.
Fine detail also holds up well. That matters when your mark carries a tagline under the logo, a registered symbol, or a date line, because those are the elements that disappear first when a process cannot resolve them.
What a CO2 Laser Actually Does
A CO2 laser works on non-metals. On glass it produces a frosted etch with a soft white finish. On coated and organic materials it removes the top layer cleanly without scorching what sits underneath.
It runs on:
- Pint glasses, wine glasses, rocks glasses
- Growlers and bottles
- Coated drinkware surfaces
The frosted finish reads well on clear glass because the contrast comes from light scattering off the etched surface rather than from any added color. It is also why an etched mark photographs differently than it looks in the hand, which is worth knowing before you approve a mockup on a screen.
Glass is where the CO2 laser does one job most buyers never think to ask about. Etched pour lines are a standard request from venues managing beverage cost, and because the line is cut into the glass rather than printed on it, it stays accurate for the life of the piece.
What Happens When a Facility Only Runs One
The job gets fitted to the machine.
Bring glassware to a facility that runs fiber only and the realistic outcomes are that the work gets steered toward a printed method instead, quoted with a subcontractor's margin and schedule buried inside it, or declined outright. Bring powder-coated stainless to a CO2-only facility and you may get a mark that lifts the coating less cleanly than a fiber mark would.
The tell is a decorator who recommends the same method regardless of what you put in front of them. A facility running both has no reason to steer you toward either.
This matters most on mixed orders, which come up more often than people expect. Tumblers for the retail shelf and pint glasses for the bar is a two-laser order. Inside one facility that is a scheduling detail. Split across two vendors it becomes two lead times, two proof rounds, and two chances for the marks to come back not matching each other.
The Variable That Decides the Result
Neither laser has a universal setting, and the reason is the material rather than the machine.
Coating thickness varies between suppliers, and it varies between batches from the same supplier. The power that gives a crisp bright mark on one lot reads faint on the next, or cuts deeper than intended. Settings have to be proven on a sample from your actual run rather than carried over from the last job that looked similar.
Fitment is the other one. An item that does not seat correctly in the fixture will not mark consistently around its circumference. The mark drifts, or the depth changes across the face. Finding that out on one piece is a great deal cheaper than finding it out on your whole order.

Does an engraved mark survive a commercial dishwasher?
