What UV Ink Won't Stick To: The Substrates We Turn Down and Why

A case of printed sports bottles comes back from a decorator looking exactly right. Clean edges, colors on target, every logo straight. Three weeks into daily use the corners of the print start lifting like a sticker someone picked at.
Nothing was mishandled and the artwork never changed. The ink cured hard the day it was printed and it is still hard now. It just never had hold of the bottle in the first place.
The failure was decided before the print head ever moved. The bottle is a plastic that UV ink does not bond to, and nobody checked.
A Print Can Look Perfect and Not Be Stuck On
UV ink cures the instant it meets UV light, going from liquid to solid in a fraction of a second. On the right surface it bonds as it cures. On the wrong surface it still cures, but as a shell resting on top of the material rather than gripping into it.
Here is the trap: both results look identical coming off the rig. Adhesion is invisible at pack-out. There are real ways to measure it, which is why adhesion testing exists as a discipline, and we have written about what those tests actually involve. But most buyers never see a test. They see the print fail in use, weeks later, one wash cycle and one thumbnail at a time.
So the useful question is not whether a decorator can print on your vessel. Almost any rig can put ink on almost anything once. The question is what the ink is bonded to when it gets there.
The Plastics Problem: Same Bottle, Different Polymer
“Plastic” is not one material. Squeeze bottles and budget sports bottles are commonly molded from polyethylene or polypropylene, plastics chosen precisely because almost nothing sticks to them. They are cheap, flexible, and easy to keep food-safe for the same underlying reason they reject ink: the surface is chemically slick, and there is nothing for a cured ink film to grip.
Untreated, these low-energy plastics do not accept UV ink. Period. A plasma or corona prep pass can fix that. It alters the outermost layer of the surface so ink can bond, and it is a real, proven process. But it is an extra step that has to exist at the facility, be matched to the polymer, and be built into the quote. A decorator who does not mention it is not planning to do it.
Untreated polyester is in the same family of refusals. So the honest version of the substrate conversation is specific, not categorical:
- Acrylic tumblers and stadium cups take UV ink well. We print them routinely.
- Sports bottles and squeeze bottles depend entirely on which polymer they are molded from.
- Two bottles that look identical in a catalog photo can behave opposite ways under ink.
That last point is the one that catches buyers. The product category tells you nothing. The polymer decides, and the polymer is not in the photo.
Glass Has Edge Cases Too
Clear, frosted, and colored glass are all standard work. Pint glasses, growlers, wine bottles, mason jars: routine.
Two glass finishes earn a slower answer. Mirror-finish glass gives the ink very little to key into, and its surface shows every flaw at full magnification. Heavily textured glass has peaks and valleys, so ink coverage varies with depth across the same pass.
Neither is an automatic no. They are test-print-first cases: one sample piece, real production settings, and a decision made by looking at an actual result instead of guessing at one. If a decorator quotes a mirror-finish run without asking for a sample first, the risk has been priced in somewhere, and it is probably in your reorder.
The Tell Is a Quote That Never Asks What It Is Made Of
Every limit in this post is public information about our own equipment. We publish it because the alternative is worse: a buyer finds the limit after the run, on their pieces, on their deadline.
Which points at the practical use of all this. You can read a decorator by their intake questions. A facility that asks what the vessel is made of, whether the surface is coated or treated, and then asks you to send one piece before quoting an unfamiliar substrate is protecting your order. A quote that comes back on a plastic vessel with no material question attached means the risk is either priced in or ignored.
The same honesty applies to economics, not just chemistry. There are jobs where the ink would hold fine and the method is still wrong: past roughly 5,000 pieces of single-color art, a screen-print line can beat us on cost, and we say so when the math tips. The method comparison is its own subject.
How We Handle It
We print direct to the substrate on stainless steel, powder-coated and raw, on clear, frosted, and colored glass, and on the plastics that take ink. Which plastics is a per-piece call, never a category call, and we make it before the quote, not after the run. Edge cases get a test print on a sample. What we cannot do well, we turn down.
Where the substrate is right and the prep is right, the print holds: manufacturer-validated past 500 dishwasher cycles, an 18-month daily commercial dishwasher test running in our own facility, and a 5B grade on ASTM D3359 adhesion, the top of the scale.
