Will Your Vessel Fit the Rig? The Size Limits of 360° Drinkware Printing

The vessel always comes first. A buyer finds the piece: a catalog item nobody else in their market is running, a custom mold, a container that just looks like the brand. They order five hundred blanks. Then they go looking for a decorator, and the conversation opens with a question nobody thought to ask at the start.
Will it fit the machine?
Most of the time the answer is yes. But the buyers who hear no are almost always holding inventory by the time they hear it, and that order of operations is the entire problem this post exists to fix.
The Clause That Decides the Job
Our own hospitality page ends its specialty-drinkware list with a conditional most readers skim past: if it is glass or rigid plastic and fits our rotary rig, we can print it. Everything in this post lives inside that clause.
The envelope is published, and it is the same on both of our UV printing pages:
- 5.1" maximum diameter
- 14.1" maximum print length
- 360° full wrap or partial
- Straight-walled and tapered cylinders
Most standard drinkware sits comfortably inside those numbers. Pint glasses, tumblers of every insulated size, wine bottles, growlers, mason jars, stadium cups: routine. The surprises cluster at the edges, and they are almost always pieces chosen for being unusual, which is exactly why they were chosen and exactly why nobody checked.
Diameter and Length Are Hard Limits. Shape Is a Setup.
The two numbers are pass-fail. A vessel wider than the rig clears or longer than the print path travels does not become printable through enthusiasm.
Shape works differently. Straight walls and tapers both run, but a taper is not a checkbox, it is a setup: the fixture and the rotary alignment get dialed to the exact diameter and taper of the piece on the machine. That is the same per-shape reality behind why minimums count per shape, and it is why two pieces with the same diameter but different tapers are two jobs, not one.
You will notice we do not publish a maximum taper angle. That is deliberate. The honest answer is to send the piece, because the fixture and the artwork both have to agree with the curve, and a number on a spec sheet cannot promise that agreement.
What Interrupts a 360° Wrap
The spec says “full wrap or partial” because not every vessel offers an uninterrupted path around itself. A clean cylinder takes an unbroken wrap: the art travels the full circumference and meets itself, and where that seam lands is a real alignment check on every wrapped job.
Then there are the interrupters. A handle. A spout. A recessed panel molded into the surface. A mold seam that stands proud enough to feel with a thumbnail. None of these is a refusal, but each one changes the design conversation from “wrap it” to “where does the art live.” A handled mug runs as a partial wrap or placed panels, planned that way at art review, with the handle as a hard stop the artwork respects rather than collides with.
This is worth knowing before the art is built, not after. A logo lockup designed as a continuous 360° band has to be rethought for a handled piece, and rethinking it at the proof stage is a proof round you could have skipped.
Fitment Is Physical, Not a Spec-Sheet Question
A piece can sit inside the envelope on paper and still be wrong in the fixture. The machine spins the vessel under a stationary process, so anything that seats off-axis shows up in the result. Our laser engraving page states the same law for the engraving side: an item that does not seat correctly in the fixture will not mark consistently, and we would rather find that out on one piece than on your whole order.
So the envelope check has two layers. The numbers answer “can it physically mount.” A sample answers “does it run true.” For familiar catalog shapes the first layer is enough. For an unusual piece, a custom mold, or drinkware you already own and are sending in, the sample is the answer, and it happens before production, not during it.
What to Send With Your Quote
Five things settle the fit question in one email:
- The product name or a link to it, and what it is made of
- Diameter, or the label from the box it came in
- Height, and how much of it the art should cover
- Straight-walled or tapered
- Any handle, spout, panel, or feature the wrap would meet
Or skip the measuring and send one piece. That is the better answer anyway for anything unusual, because it converts every question above into a look at the actual object. You see a digital mockup on your actual product at actual size before anything runs.
And if the piece is outside what the rig does, we say so.
